As a student, it can be difficult to exercise while you’re sitting in a classroom, writing essays or revising at night. Yet exercise is an important way of reducing stress and it can help you sleep better too.
It is recommended that we exercise for 30 minutes, five or more days a week, at a moderate intensity. If you don’t have 30 minutes free at any one time you can always break it up into 10-15 minute chunks during the day. Any amount of exercise is valuable to your health.
You can increase the amount you exercise by making small changes to your daily habits.
- Get off the bus one stop early and walk the rest of the way
- Ride your bike to university
- Take the stairs not the lift
- Take a brisk walk between your classes
- Walk to a park for lunch
- If you’re sitting in a chair all day, carry out leg lifts by lifting each leg, tightening the muscles and holding for 15 to 30 seconds
- Do lunges up a flight of stairs at university or home
- Take a break and play a game outside, gor for a walk or a run
All of these extra bits of exercise will help you burn calories and give you more energy. They will also provide you with more social opportunities to chat with friends or other students.
Don’t forget your diet
As well as exercising to keep fit, it is important to remember to eat healthily.
- Instead of eating out, pack a healthy lunch
- Skip dessert at lunch and grab a piece of fruit instead
- Snack they healthy way with museli bars, fruit or yoghurt
- Swop sugary drinks for juice and water
It is easy to stay fit as a student even when your diary is filled with assignments and exams. A few small changes will do you a lot of good.
