Swine flu pandemic warning issued
Fears of a global swine flu pandemic are growing after the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that the H1N1 is spreading rapidly.
The WHO increased its phase of pandemic alert to four, meaning there is now sustained human to human transmission of the influenza A virus.
Its highest level of pandemic alert is six, where there are community level outbreaks in countries across the world.
The UK Foreign Office is now advising against all but essential travel to Mexico and is urging visiting or resident British nationals to consider whether they should remain in the country.
Advice issued by the Mexican government has advised people to avoid large crowds, shaking hands and kissing people as a greeting.
Schools, museums and other public venues and events have been closed or postponed.
