THE BIG QUESTION

The big question: should private sector nurses get NHS pensions?

A review into widening the access to NHS pensions is expected to recommend that all independent sector staff delivering NHS-funded work could be allowed to join the scheme.

The review group, which includes representatives from unions, NHS Employers, and the Department of Health, said there was a “coalition of the willing” to see the change brought in. Do you agree with this proposal? Would it make movement between the NHS and the private sector easier?

  • all pension schemes should be portable otherwise people lose out when they change jobs.

  • Yes they should. If you find yourself in the same position i was in 18 months ago when
I was tupe'd over to some tin-pot private company after they were awarded a contract.

My pension that I'd accrued over many years in the NHS was frozen and the only option was to join their inferior scheme which very few did! About 90% of the original team (including me) left and I think had we been able to continue to contribute to our NHS pension that this would not have been the case.

I think its in all NHS employees best interests that this proposal goes ahead as you don't know who you'll end up working for in the years to come!

  • I think this is a great proposal if it means staff who work in care homes with the elderly may stay there and not always want to move to the NHS. Patients who are private care homes are still the responsbility of the NHS>

  • After the Trust I worked for lost the contract for my job, yes I would support this proposal. More NHS services are going to tender by commissioners as time goes on and the thought of job security is difficult to manage without loosing the pension scheme as well.
