Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSBrown pledges to prioritise global effort to cut maternal mortality
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said he is committed to placing maternal mortality high on the agenda of the G8 summit in Italy this week.
Speaking after meeting with midwives and doctors from the Global Maternal Mortality Campaign last week, the Prime Minister said: ‘It’s outrageous that one woman dies every minute in childbirth.
‘I am determined that the UK will lead international efforts to prioritise the interventions that make a difference and to help provide the resources needed to build health systems. I hope the G8 will make real progress on this issue next week,’ he added.
Representatives from the campaign, including actor Bill Nighy, also handed over a petition to Mr Brown containing more than 14 million signatures, calling for G8 leaders to deliver an extra $10bn per year to cut global maternal mortality.
