The Conservatives have published figures about the number of people who die from malnutrition in British hospitals every year.
Figures obtained by the Conservative show more than 240 people lose their lives because of malnutrition each year.
Over the last decade more than 2,300 people have died from malnutrition while in the care of the nation’s hospitals.
The report from the UK Statistics Authority also showed 19 further people died in private care homes and two more in publicly-run facilities in 2007 alone.
When care homes were included in the figures for malnutrition deaths over the last decade, the number soared to 2,656 people between 1997 and 2007.
Researchers found the regions with the biggest malnutrition death tolls were the West Midlands, where 409 people have died in the last decade, and the South East, with 388.
Nationally, the number of deaths as a result of malnutrition soared by 16% from 209 deaths in 1997 to 242 deaths in 2007.
