DH to audit hospital diabetes services

There will be a national audit of hospital inpatient services for diabetes patients on the week beginning 21 September in a bid to tackle concerns about poor patient care.

The audit will take a snap shot of inpatient activity, care and patient experience in all acute hospitals in England.

It is being run by the Department of Health’s delivery agency NHS Diabetes. Its national clinical lead for inpatient care Dr Gerry Rayman said: “The audit will provide information on current staffing levels for inpatient diabetes, the standards of care provided and the size of the problem in terms of patient numbers, morbidity, harm and patient dissatisfaction.”

The DH is concerned about the level of care and provision for diabetes patients. Only half of trusts have diabetes inpatient specialist nurses and insulin prescribing errors are amongst the highest of all drug errors.

  • This planned audit will only contribute to better patient care for the diabetics. Since insulin prescribing errors is top among the mistakes made, then this audit will clarify the situation and will make recommendation to improve the situation. I think they have also done this in the US when they listed the best hospitals in different categories.
