Equality and diversity council created

The government has created a new Equality and Diversity Council to improve quality in the health service.

It will report to the NHS Management Board and attempt to campaign for change and improved services.

Goals include creating a framework to encourage NHS organisations and staff to work closely with the communities they serve, ensuring managers consider equality and diversity issues and champion good practice.

Lay members are being asked to apply to join the council, which will include representatives from patient groups, NHS staff, social care and voluntary organisations.

It will be chaired by NHS chief executive, David Nicholson and has been created in response to Lord Darzi’s Next Stage Review of the NHS, which put a clear emphasis on diversity and equality issues.

Health minister Phil Hope said: ‘[The council] will have a vital role in championing and challenging the NHS to fulfil our shared ambition of high quality care for all.’
