Hospital admissions for obesity soar
The number of 18 to 30 year olds admitted into hospital for obesity has more than quadrupled between 2003-04 and 2007-08, latest government figures show.
The figures were published in response to a parliamentary question from the Liberal Democrats which showed that around 100 people are admitted each day in England.
The opposition party claimed the govenrment was taking the wrong approach to tackling the problem.
Liberal Democrat health spokesman Norman Lamb said: “The fact that the number of people admitted to hospital because of obesity has nearly tripled since Labour came to power makes it clear that their poorly-thought-out and gimmicky approach to public health simply isn’t working.
“Ministers need to give health trusts the freedom to innovate and make real, long term progress when it comes to tackling these problems,” he said. “Endless diktats from Whitehall won’t solve the obesity crisis, local empowerment and engagement will.”
