Maternity unit offers round-the-clock hot meals

New mothers at the Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust’ maternity unit are now able to get a hot meal of their choice at any time and to suit their cultural taste.

The new Crown Cuisine food service, which provides meals outside of normal catering hours, was started in April at the London trust as part of a new patient experience strategy and has proven a hit with patients.

Safiya Mohamed, who gave birth to her first son Mohamed in June, said: ‘It’s excellent. I wasn’t expecting halal food and the staff were very helpful.’

Senior midwife Nora Asubonteng added: ‘The food is attractive and the women have a choice and the presentation is lovely.’

  • our trust only provides hot meals at lunch time due to cost-cutting. the diabetic ladies really struggle to adapt, and everyone is unhappy. Good on this trust for recognising that women need proper food after having their babies, whatever time it is.
