Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSMental health trust opens same-sex units
A mental health trust has opened a number of same-sex units after a survey revealed patients were unhappy with having to share wards with members of the opposite sex.
The move follows a report by the Care Quality Commission which revealed that Northants Healthcare Foundation trust had performed well above the national average in the areas of treatment decisions, explanation of medication and patient’s rights, but had been let down by its lack of non-mixed wards.
Eugine Yafele, head of acute mental health services with Northamptonshire Healthcare, said: “All our new units, including a new inpatient unit for young people, which is being built on the Princess Marina Hospital site in Northampton, will feature single rooms with en-suite bathrooms. We are also planning to refurbish older people’s mental health wards at St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering.”
The survey was based on the responses of people who were admitted to mental health hospitals between April and December 2008.
