A state-of-the-art hospital in Birmingham will be named after the Queen Mother
The new hospital, to be the largest single-site development of its kind in the UK, is to be called the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
The facility, which is due to top open in June 2010, will be the city’s first new acute hospital for 70 years. It will replace Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Selly Oak Hospital.
The name was chosen after consultations with staff at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, patient groups and the public.
Julie Moore, chief executive of the trust, said: ‘It emerged that many people did not want a radically different name. The new hospital is on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Campus.
‘Therefore, it made sense to make use of the continuity that keeping the royal connection would provide,’ she said.
