State-of-the-art energy-saving technology is intended to make a new development at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children one of the UK’s greenest.
Officials have said that the £300 million Mittal Children’s Medical Centre is “as environmentally friendly as it is possible to get for a central-London building”.
The centre’s two linked buildings house new wards, operating theatres, offices and a restaurant, and the facility has been designed to boost the capacity to treat sick children by a fifth - 20,000 more patients a year.
A priority has been to replace cramped and outdated wards with new facilities where parents can sleep alongside their children in comfort and where children can eat in a separate room, visit the playroom and use a computer.
At its heart are cooling, heating and power units that as well as supplying all the centre’s energy will provide 20% extra for the rest of the site.
It is hoped that the high-tech units will save 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. A glass frontage to boost natural light, power-saving and a natural ventilation flue is aimed at cutting carbon emissions by 60%.
