New women's health unit set for Manchester opening
A health unit for women is to be opened at the University Hospital of South Manchester.
The unit, ward F16, replaces a women’s ward in the maternity unit of Wythenshawe Hospital, in a project to expand the Women’s & Maternity Centre.
The health unit has a ward with 26 beds for breast and gynaecological patients, areas for assessing patients before operations, a gynaecological assessment unit for women who have problems in early pregnancy and an outpatients’ suite for minor procedures.
Joanne Robson, who manages the women and children’s service, said: “The unit will continue to provide extremely important services to our female patients and is evidence of the progress we are making in our drive to expand services for women and children. I’d like to thank all the fantastic staff involved in making this happen.”
BBC Radio 4’s Jenni Murray, who presents the Woman’s Hour programme, will officially open the unit. Murray was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 was treated at the hospital’s Nightingale Centre. Staff from the trust’s breast and gynaecology departments will attend the launch.
