Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSNurses and other public sector workers back drink crackdown
A crackdown led by the government on excessive alcohol promotions including, all-you-can drink offers and pouring booze directly into customers’ mouths, has been backed by NHS staff in the North West.
Nearly three-quarters of NHS, local authority and police staff backed a ban on the worst of the promotions in a poll by social campaigners Our Life. Another 97% of the 1,354 staff supported mandatory free tap water in pubs and clubs, while 71% said smaller measures should be made available.
As part of the poll, one A&E nurse in Greater Manchester said drink had a ‘vast draining effect’ on the NHS in terms of treatment for alcohol-related diseases and harm and treating alcohol-dependent patients.
She added that staff also faced verbal and physical abuse on a daily basis with wards, departments and A&Es from alcohol users.
‘The cost and stress caused to key workers across the North West by excessive alcohol promotions has gone too far and people are making their voice heard now,’ said head of campaigns and advocacy for Our Life, Calum Irving.
‘The government should take note and resist pressure from the alcohol industry to “do nothing”,’ he added.
