Regulators set up European midwives network

Midwifery regulators from across the European Union are planning to set up an informal network.

This is intended to help them share fitness to practise information on midwives crossing borders, improve the exchange of best practice ideas and act together on EU legislation matters.

The network was suggested when midwifery regulators from 18 European countries met in London last month to discuss ways in which they could collaborate to enhance the safety of women and babies. The idea of the network was put forward by the French Order of Midwives and the NMC.

Christina McKenzie, head of midwifery at the NMC, said: ‘European midwifery regulators face similar challenges in terms of ensuring only those midwives who are fit to practise are able to join our registers and move between countries.

‘I am heartened by how eager colleagues across Europe are to increase collaboration, and look forward to working more closely with my EU counterparts over coming months and years,’ she said.

Tony Hazell, NMC chair and chair of the summit, added: ‘I believe that ever increasing mobility of health professionals within the EU compels us as regulators to work together to ensure the safety of service users comes first.’

  • I think this is vital as it is very demoralising for both the employer and the employee trying to recruit miodwives from the EU. The training is NOT comparable in most cases and very few should be givein NMC PIN's. Midwives are rarely acountable practitioners in their own countries. This causes confusion and great disappoinment during the recruitment process as the EU midiwves can not understand why they are not recruited when they have been senior midwives in their own country. My Trust has taken on 6 midwives and we have had to provide extensive extra training based on the NMC Skills clusters to become effective members of the team. It is hard to expect a Trust to pay the EU Midwife the same as a UK trained midwife who works autonomously.
I would lke to be part of the Think Tank.
