Review will consider simplifying the KSF

A forthcoming review of the Knowledge and Skills Framework career development scheme will investigate whether it can be simplified in a bid to increase uptake.

As Nursing Times revealed last month, the NHS staff council are in the process of commissioning an independent review of the scheme in England.

Nursing Times has now obtained a copy of the terms of reference of the review. The primary aim of the review is to ‘consider the KSF structure, processes, and the barriers to implementation’.

‘It will make proposals as to how to maximise the usage and benefits of KSF and increase appraisal/development review rates across the NHS,’ the document said.

In order to do this it will look at ‘whether there are any trade-offs between simplification and/or reduction in detail that may reduce the barriers to implementation and the potential benefits of the KSF to staff and organisations’.

The review is due to start in the autumn, with findings published in 2010.
