Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSSingle renal network to be set up for Wales
A single organisation is being set up to manage kidney services across Wales.
Welsh health minister Edwina Hart said the All-Wales Renal Network would plan and develop services for the country.
It will bring together the current Renal Advisory Group and the North and South Wales Renal Networks.
Ms Hart said: “It is essential we deliver the highest quality renal services to patients in all parts of Wales. The All-Wales Renal Network will ensure improvements and developments are consistent across the country.
“Work is already underway with local communities to deliver a programme of dialysis expansion across Wales and I have already agreed an additional investment of £2.5m for 2008-09 and £6.8m for 2009-10,” she said.
“In addition, we are continuing our work with the Kidney Wales Foundation to encourage more people to sign up to the organ donor register through the Donate Wales campaign,” she added.
The assembly has also consulted on changing the law on organ donation and is currently considering whether to move to a system of presumed consent, which as so far been resisted in England.
Kidney Wales Foundation chair Roy Thomas said: “One network covering the whole of Wales is a positive step forward for kidney patients.”
