Teenager starts nurse training at the hospital that saved her life

Eighteen-year-old Amy, who suffered with the condition since the age of nine, became one of the youngest people ever to undergo a kidney transplant at the South Yorkshire hospital.

The Beighton teenager now has the freedom to lead a normal life and has begun a nursing apprenticeship at the hospital’s cardiothoracic unit.

She said: “My illness made me really tired and I missed out on lots of normal teenage activities like going to the pictures or for meals with my friends because I always had to be home before 7pm for my daily dialysis. My life has changed so much since the operation, I can now go out with my mates, I’m free from dialysis and I can have a job without feeling exhausted.”

“The great care I received at the Northern General Hospital inspired me to start a career in nursing. It’s great to be learning and caring for others at the same hospital that cared for me - I already know what a difference the staff here make to people’s lives.”

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust became the first trust in Yorkshire to set up an organ donation committee which aims to boost the number of donors.
