Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSToolkit for acute nurses who encounter patients with learning disabilities
A toolkit to help nurses in the acute sector care for patients with learning disabilities has been launched in north Staffordshire.
The guide My Next Patient has a Learning Disability: A Toolkit for Supporting People with Learning Disabilities will be launched next week and aims to improve the knowledge and skills of healthcare workers in acute in-patient settings.
The toolkit contains various communication aids – a DVD involving a patient care pathway, information about capacity and consent, and leaflets and booklets from a range of specialist areas.
Co-author Sue Read, from Keele University’s school of nursing and midwifery, said: ‘This toolkit is easy to access and use. It should be of use not only when caring for people with a learning disability in hospitals, but also other patients who have communication impairments, and should be useful to a range of health care workers.’
The bespoke toolkit was developed by a collaborative team including professionals from health, education and information technology, representatives from local PCTs, two local advocacy groups, three people with a learning disability and two parents.
