A&E missing opportunity to tackle alcohol
Just 32 of the 191 major accident and emergency departments in England have access to an alcoholhealth worker or clinical nurse specialist in the area, according to survey findings.
No departments routinely measured blood alcohol, and 84 departmentsnever assessed blood alcohol levels, said researchers from the National Addiction Centre at Kings College London.
‘Although departments may be willing to address hazardousalcohol consumption, the low numbers of departments utilisingformal screening tools suggests that patients who may benefitfrom help or advice remain undetected,’ they warned.
