Bipolar drug nears approval
The European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has issued a positive opinion on a Marketing Authorisation Application for aripiprazole in treating patients who experience predominantly manic episodes and whose manic episodes respond to the drug. Its developers expect a final decision on the marketing authorisation in April 2008.
Aripiprazole received approval for the treatment of schizophrenia in 2004. If approved, aripiprazole will be only the second atypical antipsychotic indicated for the prevention and treatment of manic episodes in the past five years.
