Bird flu vaccine approved

The European medicines watchdog has granted marketing authorisation for the first pre-pandemic bird flu vaccine.

Prepandrix, which contains inactivated H5N1 antigens, has been recommended by the European Medicines Agency’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP).

Pre-pandemic vaccines are prepared from influenza viruses with a pandemic potential and are intended for use before a pandemic is declared or during an officially declared pandemic.

The CHMP has also approved Pandemrix, a mock-up H5N1 influenza vaccine, for use during a pandemic. Both vaccines are manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals SA.
