A government commissioned report into sexual health provision has called for more nurse-delivered services to improve care.
The evaluation of one-stop shop models of sexual health provision, published by the Department of Health yesterday, concluded that access to services was inadequate.
It suggested there could be more nurse-delivered care, saying: ‘nurses are not necessarily utilised enough in terms of providing an integrated service’.
However it noted that such provision would be dependent on better specialist training for nurses and increased independent nurse prescribing.
‘There are particular problems with nurse sexual health training at present,’ the report said. ‘More nurses should be trained to manage whole episodes of care, including prescribing/supplying treatment for STIs and contraceptive methods.’
