Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSCall for regulation of herbalists, acupuncturists and chinese medicine practitioners
Medical herbalists, acupuncturists and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners should be regulated, according to the Health Professions Council.
The HPC has written to the government following a report published by a report by the ‘Department of Health Steering Group on the Statutory Regulation of Practitioners of Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and other Traditional Medicine Systems Practised in the United Kingdom’, report published in May.
It proposed that the HPC should be the statutory regulator for acupuncturists, medical herbalists and traditional Chinese medicine practitioners.
Under the Health Professions Order 2001 HPC can make recommendations to the Secretary of State concerning any professions which in its opinion should regulated under the Health Act 1999.
The HPC currently keeps a register of 13 different professions, including radiographers and paramedics.
