The report, published today by the British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, presents the views of 18 charities representing groups potentially at risk of being most severely affected if their nutrition needs are not identified and addressed.
But Debbie Dzik-Jurasz, RCN learning and development facilitator, said NHS nurses could not be expected to screen patients effectively if they did not have weighing scales or were not trained in how to carry out a nutritional assessment.
‘Nutrition screening is important but it is also vital that hospital nurses have access to the appropriate tools, education and training to carry it out,’ she said.
