Calls to monitor nutritional risk

Nurses have been warned of the need to screen all patients for nutritional risk.

At a Westminster conference on hospital food last week, Richard Wilson, director of nutrition and dietetics at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London, issued a warning about hospital nutrition and called on nurses to report incidents of patients receiving the wrong meal or no meal at all. ‘Getting it right is a difficult thing for us to achieve but we do have a problem with malnutrition,’ he said.

But Debbie Dzik-Jurasz, the RCN’s Nutrition Now project lead, cited time pressures. ‘With A&E targets, ward rounds, drug rounds and patients going to theatre, there is not enough time to monitor what patients are eating and drinking,’ she said.
