Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSHelp through hair loss
A charity that helps cancer survivors, hairdressers and nurses to work together following treatment has received a big boost from the DH.
My New Hair was founded by celebrity hairdresser Trevor Sorbie in 2006 and, through an £86,500 grant, the DH will help to extend the programme’s advanced nurse-led, after care skills training for hairdressers, helping them understand the needs of cancer survivors and their hair.
The charity also provides advice for patients and NHS staff on wig styling, hair loss and re-growth.
This has inspired a new project from the North of England Cancer Network to review and improve wig services for patients.
An NHS toolkit featuring My New Hair has been provided to all NHS networks across the country for guidance.
Vicky Hodgson, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy, said: ‘It may not be the first thing on your mind when you are diagnosed with cancer, but having a decent hair style gives you a chance to feel feminine again. The work Trevor is doing has made a real difference to my self-esteem.’
Nearly 200 hairdressers have been trained and the aim is for this number to double across the country over the next three years.
