Community nurse appointed as DH equality and diversity advisor
A community nurse has been appointed as the Department of Health’s expert advisor on equality and diversity issues.
Joan Myers, a nurse consultant in community children’s nursing at NHS Islington, will work two days a week at the DH as its professional officer for diversity, working closely with chief nursing officer for England Dame Christine Beasley.
In particular she will support the CNO’s black and minority ethnic advisory group and the Mary Seacole Awards Steering Group. She will also provide advice on diversity issues as part of work on the NHS Next Stage Review and the modernising nursing careers programme.
Dame Christine said: ‘We are delighted that Joan Myers has been appointed to this important national post and look forward to her working with the professional leadership team.’
Ms Myers has previously set up and still runs a nurse-led eczema clinic in Islington. She also has an honorary lecturer’s post at London South Bank University lecturing both pre- and post-registered nurses
In addition, she regularly speaks at secondary schools and six form colleges to inspire BME students who are interested in entering the nursing or medical profession.
