First mobile NHS infection control unit starts work

A new mobile cleansing unit designed by a nurse will be unveiled today, making it the first of its kind in the country.

Val Leggett, nurse consultant in infection control at Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, designed the unit with John Downes, a member of the trust’s estates team.

The unit will be used to disinfect equipment, including beds and will ensure that noisy steam cleaning tasks can be performed away from wards.

Maggie Wheeler, chairperson of the trust, said: ‘The trust has put itself at the forefront of infection control with the development of this unit.

‘Our staff, especially John and Val, are to be congratulated for the bright idea which will, we hope, prove invaluable to many other trusts and other organisations in the fight against healthcare acquired infections,’ she said.
