Cheryll Adams - for Services to Public Health Nursing
Cheryll Adams is and independent consultant and former professional lead, Unite/Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’ Association
Cheryll worked as a health visitor for almost 20 years before becoming professional lead for the CPHVA. She completed her Professional Doctorate in Nursing in 2007, taking as her thesis: ‘Mental Health Promotion in Families with Pre-school Children: The Role and Training Needs of Health Visitors’. She is a passionate advocate for the use of evidence based research to inform early detection and intervention in child and family problems.
Cheryll has been highly active in lobbying government to create a better understanding of how a modern universal health visiting service is essential to deliver improved health outcomes through early detection and prevention of problems and referral if necessary. Health visiting had been in decline as its relevance and professional underpinning had not been understood by clinical practitioners, and even the name had disappeared from government documents. She has persuaded stakeholders that it is vital to support and empower all parents through the early years. A notable success was that health visitors are named as the lead for the Healthy Child Programme 0-5 years.
