Graham Pink - nursing's best known whistle-blower

Appalled about understaffing in the geriatric ward at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, staff nurse Graham Pink wrote to everyone he could think of, finally going public on the front page of Guardian Society in 1990.

He was sacked for his actions. Now in his 80s, Mr Pink still supports whistle-blowers.

  • Whistleblowing is obviously of great importance but needs to follow strict policy before going public to be effective and to protect all concerned. The problem is that the authorities who are being complained about are often the policy makers as well so devise the rules to their own advantage.

    I did a quick search on google last night on whistleblowing and although I did not have time to read the details my first impression was of so many different organisations such as employment orgs. and official gov. orgs, and even within the NHS, offering different guidelines for whistleblowing. It looks to me as though it would be far more fair and effective if there was one policy for all right across the NHS. I feel that in other areas also that costs would be cut and care would be better and more equitable if all these different organisations, policies and guidelines were reduced to the essentials - another case of too many expensive chiefs, none of whom know what the others are doing and far too few indians on front line care taking their orders from those who have no real idea of what they are doing besides paper pushing.
