Janet Marsden - Advanced care in ophthalmic and emergency nursing
A passionate ophthalmic nurse, Janet developed advanced practice roles in the specialty
Janet has been an ophthalmic nurse since completing her training and finding there were no jobs in A&E. Her reluctant interest developed into a passion for ophthalmic nursing and she has developed the emergency care side of her role
Having led an ophthalmic emergency department, Janet branched out through teaching and research into general emergency care as well as retaining a firm base in ophthalmic nursing. She has published extensively, including two key ophthalmic nursing textbooks, and many professional and research papers in areas of emergency care ophthalmology and advanced practice in nursing. She is one of the editors of Emergency Triage the textbook of the Manchester triage system, which is now used in many emergency departments internationally.
Janet chaired the ophthalmic nursing forum of the Royal College of Nursing for a number of years, leading projects for the RCN such as a wide ranging collaboration on CPD and a competence framework for ophthalmic nursing. With a chair in Ophthalmology and Emergency Care from Manchester Metropolitan University Janet leads the Centre for Effective Emergency Care (CEEC) and retains a firm base in practice. She also has an honorary chair with City University and strong international links in both emergency care and ophthalmology.
