High BMI stroke patients stay longer in hospital
Higher body mass index is associated with longer hospital stays following strokes, a study has shown.
Researchers in the US assessed the body mass index (BMI) of 451 stroke patients between 2003 and 2006 and looked at outcomes as they were discharged from hospital.
Patients with a body mass index of more than 35 only had a 23% chance of being functional on discharge. Those with a BMI between 25 and 29 -considered overweight -had a 44.7% chance of being functional on discharge.
Those with BMIs of less than 25 -considered lean -had an average hospital stay of 5.2 days. but patients with BMIs greater than 35 had an average stay of 6.2 days.
