Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHS£100m fund to help turn research into practice
A £100m fund has been launched to help clinicians translate medical innovation into clinical practice.
The Health Innovation Challenge Fund, run jointly by the Department of Health and the Wellcome Trust, will provide money for clinicians to develop technologies, products, and interventions that will benefit the NHS and its patients.
The aim is to build on the UK’s position as a leading innovator in healthcare, and to provide the ‘bridging gap’, which is sometimes missing, between the ideas themselves, and ensuring they have a practical use.
The fund will invite bids from organisations and researchers in several themes, the first of which is ‘advancing genetic discoveries into clinical practice’.
Outgoing health minister Lord Darzi said: ‘There is a significant body of evidence to suggest that investment in innovation produces long-term benefits overall. This fund will provide vital resource and support to the UK healthcare sector.’
