Community nurses happier with streamlined KSF

NHS Wakefield District’s adult community nursing team have successfully piloted a refined version of the KSF that gives staff have a clearer outline of their responsibilities and their future training needs.

The PCT’s workforce development manager Heather Prest said an initial review had found little difference in the roles being carried out by band 3s and band 6s.

She said the aim of the refined KSF was to ensure senior team members spent more time in a consultative, rather than hands on, role and that the team developed a range of appropriate specialists in each clinical area, such as wound management.

Staff better understood their role within the team and, as a result, levels of stress-related sickness absence had also fallen, she added.

NHS Wakefield District learning and development manager and Unison representative Nicola Roberts said: “Staff are a lot happier with the approach we are adopting to KSF. They can identify with the progression within services.”  

The PCT is rolling out the initiative across its other nursing services.
