Torbay Care Trust will use the technology to help collect patients’ and carers’ views on end of life care at Rowcroft Hospice.
A kiosk will be placed in the hospice and staff will be given hand held survey machines to seek anonymous views, as a result of the trust winning funding and equipment from patient advocacy organisation Picker Institute Europe.
One of the hospice’s palliative care specialist nurses, Jane Briggs, said although patients’ views were already sought, there was a feeling they were loath to criticise.
She said: “Because of the nature of palliative care it is sometimes difficult to hear exactly what patients, carers and others think, but this will help us obtain a clearer picture.”
Torbay was found to have the lowest proportion of people dying in hospital in a report on variations in place of death, published earlier this month.
