Nurses will not be required to register with the government’s new vetting and barring scheme for those working with children and vulnerable adults until 2010, the Home Office has announced.
The scheme, to be administered by the newly created Independent Safeguarding Authority, was due to be officially launched in October this year. However, the Home Office last week set a later date of July 2010 for registration applications from new entrants to roles working with children, and November 2010 as a legal requirement for registration.
The union Unison welcomed the decision to delay the scheme’s implementation in order for it be tested properly, and also reiterated calls for government to pay the £64 one-off fee that is required to register with it.
