In his role Mr Carter will be liaising with the school and the RCN and help develop nursing and midwifery education and research.

Mr Carter said: ‘I see this as an opportunity to further strengthen the already strong partnership between this world-class nursing School and the RCN as the leading voice of nursing.’

Mr Carter joins a number of other high profile visiting academics at the School including the NHS chief nursing officer Dame Christine Beasley and health minister Anne Keen.

Head of the school, Professor Anne Marie Rafferty said: ‘We have a strong track record working in collaboration with the RCN and as chief executive and general secretary Peter sets the standard for professional leadership in the nursing arena.’
