Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSNMC pledges further progress as report heralds improvements
The NMC has acknowledged that is cannot be ‘complacent’ in its efforts to rehabilitate itself as the nursing profession’s regulator.
The regulator was responding to a largely positive report on its restructuring programme and efforts to improve performance over the last 12 months, published last week by the super-regulator the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence.
The CHRE concluded that the NMC has made good progress in improving its culture and governance since widespread failings were identified by an investigation last year.
Kathy George, NMC chief executive and registrar, said: ‘While we are pleased that CHRE have acknowledged the significant progress made over the previous 12 months, the NMC must avoid complacency.
‘We have made significant progress across the organisation including a new governance structure, productive relationships with our key professional stakeholders and measurable progress with Fitness to Practise. However, there is still much left to achieve,’ she said.
‘CHRE expect us to make further improvements over the next year and we will continue to work hard to do so in order to ensure that public protection remains at the heart of everything we do,’ she added.
