Midwife awards for innovation

More than a dozen midwives were recognised for their innovative work at the RCM annual awards in London last week.

Among the winners were Susanne Darra and Marian Mclvor, midwifery lecturers from Swansea University, who were rewarded for ‘Jessica Tate: a virtual pregnancy’- a system which uses video and audio to help students understand all aspects of pregnancy and birth

Meanwhile two midwives from Forth Park Hospital, Kirkcaldy, Pamela Cooke and Doreen Brunton, won for a scheme that has almost doubled their unit’s normal delivery birth rates.

Dame Karlene Davis of the RCM, said ‘Midwives are striving to find new ways to improve women’s experience, often in the face of huge work pressures’
