Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSMidwife workload on the increase
An answer given to a parliamentary question by the Liberal Democrats shows the number of births per midwife has increased by 6.5% across England since 2001.
But in the East Midlands the rise has been 25%, in the South Central region 19% and 16% in the North East. The smallest increase has been in the North West, at 8%.
The Liberal Democrats have called for a national review of maternity services capacity.
‘There simply aren’t enough midwives to deliver on the Government’s promises of one-to-one maternity care, said Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Norman Lamb. ‘With the birth rate rising and many midwives set to retire over the next decade, the situation will only get worse.’
