Ministers criticise nurse nutrition training
Announcing a Department of Health action plan on nutritional care, published today, Mr Lewis reiterated NMC plans to assess all student nurses on their use of nutrition principles in practise.
The principles will form part of the NMC’s ‘essential skills clusters’ that are to be introduced in September next year.
When questioned as to whether he was surprised that nurses needed to be taught how to feed patients, Mr Lewis said: ‘No. I’m not surprised. I think it’s about the way that the professions have changed in recent times, perhaps over decades and almost the fundamentals and basics have been put to one side.
‘We need to put the fundamentals back into nursing and into the health system,’ he added.
The strategy includes five key priorities for action.
