New fungal nail infection advice issued

Experts have released new advice for treating fungal nail infections, which are common in patients aged over 60.

Fungal nail infections can be diagnosed by finding a discolouration or thickening of the edge of the nail and a crumbling, yellow debris around the edge.

The bulletin advise includes: “Keeping nails trimmed short and filed down; wearing well-fitting shoes; and maintaining foot hygiene.”
If necessary, oral terbinafine is advised as the most effective antifungal treatment, with a clinical response in 66% of patients.

Fungal nail infections effect 2-10% of adults and 14-28% of over 60 year olds.
