A new guideline on how to care for patients with learning disabilities while in hospital has been issued by HFT, the national charity for adults with learning disabilities, formerly known as the Home Farm Trust.
Produced in response to the July 2008 government publication Healthcare for All – which highlighted the poor treatment received by hospitalised patients with learning disabilities – the guideline is designed for use by hospital staff, carers and patients’ families.
It provides essential information and advice from admission to discharge, including a risk assessment framework, admission checklist and tools for communicating to hospital staff what they need to know about caring for a patient with a learning disability.
