Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSNew register for aromatherapists
A register for aromatherapists has been started by a national independent regulator in an attempt to protect patients using the service.
Members of the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CHNC) will have to meet minimum standards of qualification and experience as well as abiding by a code of practice.
Any complaints from patients will be handled by the council, which was set up in April last year for practitioners of complementary and natural healthcare disciplines.
Nutritional and massage therapists have so far been invited to join the CHNC’s register, but disciplines including reflexology, yoga therapy and Reiki are due to be included later this year.
Maggie Dunn, co-chair of the CNHC, said: ‘By applying to the CNHC register and demonstrating that they meet the CNCH entry criteria, aromatherapists will then receive a certificate incorporating the CNHC quality mark for public display and showing the details of their entry on the CNHC Register.’
Aromatherapy uses essential oils, extracted from plants, to improve health and prevent disease in massage, bathing and inhalations.
