Mothers' 'choice' to see stillborn babies clarified
NICE has clarified a recommendation about stillbirth in its 2007 antenatal and postnatal mental health guideline.
The guidance states that mothers whose infants are stillborn or die soon after birth “should not be routinely encouraged to see and hold the dead infant”.
NICE has issued a clarification over concerns this was open to misinterpretation. The clarification says women should be given the choice of seeing and holding their baby but they should not be encouraged to take up this choice if they do not wish to.
