Peter Carter praises nurses put at risk by reforms

Royal College of Nursing chief executive and general secretary Peter Carter has paid tribute to staff at NHS organisations due to be abolished under government reforms.

In a message sent to members in response to the government’s white paper on health, he said he would be putting on record the college’s acknowledgement of the commitment and hard work of those who work for primary care trusts and strategic health authorities.

Mr Carter said: “Their contribution to achieving improvements in health care over recent years must not be underestimated, and the RCN believes the skills and experience of many of them will be crucial to the future success of the NHS.”

  • How very comforting...this doubtlessly goes a long way towards ensuring patient comfort and safety are maintained.

Government interference in the set up and running of the NHS for blatant financial reasons should be roundly condemned by the RCN.

  • peter carter your having a laugh if you done something years ago or even this year this problely wouldnt have happened i dont know what they pay you for you havent done anything to earn it and you want to say "sorry" bullsh*t where is your back bone call your self a bloke you need a pay reveiw going down hill?

    Unsuitable or offensive?

  • Those Registered Nurses who pay their Union dues to these people to protect their NHS pay and conditions and to support them in times of such political attacks must be feeling that their money is well spent. Not.

    Unsuitable or offensive?

  • I agree. If our contribution to improving health care is so greatly valued, what will happen when we are gone? Those of us who are employed by PCT's and GP's have always done NHS care, but the RCN has never fully supported/backed us in terms of pay and conditions.

  • Either the RCN are in the strangle hold of government are they are completely unable to defend staff. Working recently at a PCT that became a 'third way' provider it was interesting to note some senior staff scampering off to ensure their terms and conditions on the commissioning side of the PCT - not looking so secure for them now though.

    Unsuitable or offensive?

  • the RCN is a nodding dog to the government and its poor treatment of nurses where is the value? as a profession we caught up with teachers and police in terms of pay now watch as we fall behind again or worse

    Unsuitable or offensive?

  • I left the RCN for Unison some years ago because the RCN are far more interested in preserving the notion of Nursing as a profession rather than defending and supporting those in that profession. I'm not paying for that!

At least Unison puts up a bit of a fight on my behalf. Seems to me the Gov. tells the RCN to 'jump' and the RCN asks 'how high'. I'm amazed that even the dimmest of Registered Nurses continue to pay money to these people though, I admit, the RCN provides a nicer badge.

  • Nicer badge, better library, more indemnity insurance. And we are not cleaners. But we are represented by colluding milquetoasts.

Doctor Carter you are a joke – a sick one but, I must admit, a well paid one. Gotta give you kudos where it's due – you earn more in a year than I've done, in total, since 1974. You don't give a flying-fig about your membership. How's your Latin holding up mate?

Morituri te salutant = Those who are about to die salute you.

Can someone please enlighten me. Who the “fug” put a “Doctor” in charge of an organisation that's supposed to be representing “Nurses?”

Am I the only one that can connect the words “Fox” and “Hen-house” here?

May I swiftly return to apologise to the reader(s) of these hallowed pages. Peter Carter – it seems – is NOT a Doctor as I had previously assumed. In fact he's got less nursing qualifications than I have... which means he's a TOTAL twonk... just like I am.

Listen up you proud upstanding RCN members... I honestly don't know how he managed to inveigle himself up into the premiership of your ranks BUT - if he could do it – so could I (in the process I may have needed a very large tube of KY jelly, a large wodge of dosh and a willing boy-scout troop but I could have done it!)

Therefore you may as well listen to me as listen to him...

    Hear that?

That's the air whistling between my ears...

That's as much support you are going to get from the Peter Carter/RCN too!

My comment (although slightly altered) still stands... Who put an RMN in charge of the chickens?

FFS the jerk wrote a thesis entitled "Understanding reasons why nurses abuse patients in their care"

    WTF????

Does this guy sound like someone you'd seriously want to represent you in a disciplinary hearing?

Guilty until proven guilty. Totally against the concept of natural justice. That's the RCN way. Always has been and always will be.

  • I personally think Peter Carter has done a brilliant job since he took over at the RCN. I would suggest you email him directly to express your concerns rather than posting such offensive comments.
