Maintain pressure on reforms to protect NHSStatins reduce arthritis risk
Taking statins, drugs used to lower cholesterol, may reduce the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, according to new Israeli research.
The study looked at 1.8 million people in Israel who regularly took statins and did not have rheumatoid arthritis.
It then analysed the incidence of newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis between 1998 and 2007 amongst the group and found during this period there were 2, 578 cases of the disease.
Its occurrence among people who did not persistently take statins was 51 per cent higher than amongst those who used them for 80 per cent of the follow-up period.
