Diabetics lack discipline with insulin schedule

More than one in three diabetes patients skip doses or fail to take their insulin as prescribed, researchers have found.

The study, conducted in eight countries among almost 3, 000 respondents, goes on to warn that the patients stated that they had failed to take their insulin as prescribed or missed doses on average three times in the past month. But it adds that just over three quarters of physicians estimated that in reality the number of missed doses could be as high as six a month.

The Global Attitudes of Patients and Physicians in Insulin Therapy (GAPP) was funded by Novo Nordisk, a global healthcare company.

  • I am sure that is not done deliberately . It is so easy to sit down to a meal with your family, eat and chat and forget your insulin. Also if you are hypo before a meal and take your insulin afterwards you can forget. As type I insulin dependant diabetic ...late onset at the age of 60 , also a theatre nurse with a fairly organised life schedule I can honestly say you need an iron discipline to deal with the life style that is demanded of you, So a little sympathy for the diabetics who forget, they know it does not do them any good and more praise for their efforts at control would be more helpful.

  • as a community nurse who has been on insulin for 12 months, i admit that i have at times "forgotten" to administer my insulin. there many be a small number of people who take insulin who delibertly miss their medication and how these people are supported needs complex physical and phycological care.

oh dear better go and give my insulin before i start off to work!!
