NICE launches commissioning guidance

Three new commissioning guides have been published by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence.

The guides include an interactive tool for comparing local service data against benchmarks to help commissioners determine the level of services needed locally.

Guidance on commissioning peer support services for breastfeeding women says PCTs should use the Baby Friendly Initiative to raise awareness of breast feeding, to educate women on how to breastfeed and to introduce peer-support programmes.

The paper on commissioning services for women with ante-natal and post-natal depression highlights the need to identify and target women with common mental health disorders, and to explain the risks and benefits of receiving treatment.

Guidance on commissioning adult epilepsy diagnosis services stresses the importance of ensuring prompt access to a specialist (within two weeks of a suspected seizure) and that EEG or MRI scans are made available within four weeks of a request.
